3 Common Use Cases for Digital Sealing
Digital seals/signatures represent important benefits for organizations but may also demand significant investments to realize this step in digital transformation. Existing processes do not allow for the signing/sealing process and require systems to be adapted. You should therefore first consider the processes in your organization where the integration with such systems has a limited impact on your existing environments in combination with a quick ROI.

Convert everything to PDF/A? Including PDF files?
In recent years, as the need for Long Term Archiving and Long Term Preservation of "Digital Born" information has increased, so has the call for a universal archiving format been increasing. The idea behind this is, is to have a file format that allows you to permanently store and read information without any loss of information. If possible, even the “graphical” information, in case e.g. text color or the font used would convey any information. Enter PDF/A, the solution to it all. Or not?

Why you need to think about Digital Sealing.... now!
Did you say sealing? Don’t you mean signing? No, not really. When you sign a document electronically, it’s called “digital signing” or “electronic signing”. It has the same effect as signing a paper document with a pen, like when you sign the papers to buy a house or your employment contract. The actual act of signing a document digitally can take many forms. But how can you make it stick? Which methods or procedures assure you that it’s a valid signature...

Why Insurance Companies should go Digital... and best start with their mailroom
For a time now sectors as diverse as entertainment, travel and retail have been seeing the disruption a new digital player with knowledge of new technologies can cause. The product designs are generally newer and better. Traditional companies are already feeling the impact but so far most insurance companies have not. The latter have usually retained a traditional model and their income has not yet been heavily ‘diminished’...

As there was no Momentum in 2013, there were no major IIG product launches or announcemements made at the end of last year. But today... Looking at “Negative Space” to Drive Positive ROI in Healthcare
When I see prospects weighing IT buying decisions, I am always surprised by those that focus exclusively on what “new” functionality they will enjoy. This is certainly important. But an experienced architect will realize that this is counter-intuitive. Don’t look for space, but look for negative space. Similarly, one of the main benefits I see in hospitals evaluating application migration are the headaches they take out and not only the new capabilities they will gain. Decommissioning older applications is a common example. More benefits...

Debugging the DocuShare Tomcat server using JPDA
ometimes it might be necessary to debug a (DocuShare) Tomcat instance. What if you deployed a custom webapp or servlet on the default DocuShare Tomcat that interacts with the DocuShare and all of a sudden you get issues in a production environment? The easiest way would be to debug your deployed code directly in production in a non-invasive way. This can be achieved by using the Java Platform Debugger Architecture (JPDA). This enables you to debug your code line by line from your IDE (ie. Eclipse) while it is deployed on a Tomcat server. Sadly, it requires a non-standard way to set it up for DocuShare...

Setting locale in Documentum Composer
It is a known problem with Documentum Composer that it uses the locale of the underlying OS to set its default locale when creating project. For example, my machine's locale is set to nl but that doesn't mean all the Documentum Content Servers I develop for are nl aswell... Most Content Servers are plain old en. When trying to install a project on a Content Server that only supportsen when Composer's locale is not en, you will come across the following message...

Integrating GWT with Spring and Hibernate
The following blogpost will be a little different than my others. It will not focus on ECM related development but rather GWT development. Although not really related to ECM, I figured I'd write a tutorial on how to set up a GWT application with a Spring/Hibernate backend since it took me a long time to get it working exactly the way I wanted. There are a lot of tutorials but I thought they all missed something. All source code of this tutorial is available. I added a zipped version of the complete GWT project as attachment to this blogpost.

Next Generation Documentum Clients: ECM 2.0
In the past, I've already reported about My Documentum (MyDocumentum) and Centerstage. Now, with the release getting closer, there is some more news about these clients. General Acceptance release of both is September 1st. The release date has been pushed back, apparently due to the possible late addition of the Sharepoint Web parts to the My Documentum suite. EMC says not to be taking any chances with proper testing of the client applications... The true innovation is CenterStage. But let's start with My Documentum...

Creating a custom TBO
As my first blogpost, I decided to start off easy and do a (modified) repost of my blogpost on the EMC Community site on how to develop a custom TBO. The question on how to create a custom TBO is frequently asked on the internet (specifically the EMC and other Documentum related forums), and although there are many other tutorials out there, I felt the need to write down the steps once again in a simple, yet explanatory manner. "Type-based business objects (TBOs) are the most common types of business objects...

Creating a Flat Panel in Flex
The Panel in the Adobe Flex lay-out containers stack is a great component. It immediately reminds users of the typical windows we get in most operating systems today, in contrast to most other container components. It's for that reason that the Panel component is very popular, and rightly so. However, there's one thing that has always bothered me while developing Flex-based applications: the main content area of a Panel...

Although I've had my own theory about the difference between CMS and WCM for years, I've never come across any other source that clearly explains the difference between both acronyms. Success in ECM
On the 25th of September, Docbyte is attending the Congress Innovations@DocumentManagement. I'm giving a presentation about how you can make the best of your ECM implementation, based on the experience we have in this field. The key reasons for ECM project failures are taken from the AIIM website. The major interesting fact about those key reasons for ECM implementation failures, is that non of these reasons are directly technology related, as many of us ECM professionals have known for quite a while. The main reasons are related to issues about lack of knowledge, sponsorship and change management:
